Save the Cactus Cafe.org
A campaign of Friends of the Cactus Cafe

Although there is an ongoing discussion among the members of the group holding formal conversations with UT about the future of the Cactus Cafe, Friends of the Cactus Cafe feels that it is important to share with you these goals that the group has agreed on, so far:
  1. Continuation of current diverse Cactus Cafe programming to assure the preservation of the fundamental character of the venue, with expansion to include additional diverse programming.
  2. Continuation of daily (six days per week) cafe and bar operations with supervision by professional experienced staff.
  3. Increased student involvement in operations and programming of, and performing in, the Cactus Cafe, working with professional and experienced staff, and interfacing with professional musicians, through student artist-in-residence and internship programs, and employment opportunities.
  4. Enhance student hands-on learning through the Cactus Cafe.
  5. A financially self-sustaining business model that will support the above.
  6. Provide a structure for short and long term community input and support.

For Reid Nelson:

Sir, in your opinion is the series of meetings between UT Administration and "the group holding formal conversations with UT" proceeding in good faith?

So far (that is, at least from the March 30 "Goals" post), the word seems encouraging; however, for those of us not present at the table, does Administration seem to play fair in terms of listening and keeping its promises?

In short, do you feel that real progress may ensue?

I note the conspicuous delay in the online posting of the Union's Board of Directors' minutes, which are still current only through November 13 of last year at http://www.utexas.edu/txunion/cdc/peeps/board/2?section=about.

This concerns me because to date Administration has seemed so far from forthcoming in terms of a reliable accounting of exactly how and why this fiasco arose. The preponderance of unanswered questions in that regard from the February 26 BoD meeting speaks for itself.

Of course, regardless of whether anyone ever comes clean and stands up to answer those questions honestly, regime change may not occur soon.

THE MOST IMPORTANT GOAL REMAINS TO SAVE THE CACTUS!

Thank you for your efforts, sir, please continue to keep us posted, and let us know how we can help.

See you & everybody else at the Union Theater next Tuesday night April 6 at 7:30!

Theee "goals" most unfortunately do not address the concern of franchising the Cactus Cafe to ARAMARK or third party in order to "save it. What is official position on this option? (before I order a T-shirt)

Thank you
